Impact investments in East Africa

In May 2016, we invested in a small shoe manufacturing business, where we saw real potential for growth and impact. The business is owned and run by two incredibly committed and talented young women. They were looking for capital to be able to improve the quality of their products and to increase production to meet the demand. Equally important, they were seeking strategic advice and access to expertise and connections within the fashion industry. We are now working together to improve production and create a long-term sustainable business, generating financial returns.

We invest in talented and committed entrepreneurs, capable of creating sustainable businesses.

In October 2016, we invested in a Montessori school, located in Kigali. The school, which is run by a hugely committed and experienced couple, offers Rwandan families a high-standard educational alternative for their children. The school needed to grow and was seeking support to make the transition to be able to serve a larger group of children. We are very happy to be working together to support the school in its efforts to grow and reach its full potential.

We formed part of a group of pilot stage investors in a revolutionary plant health business, partly funded by DFID.  The objective of the business is to introduce better quality fertilisers and plant health advice to small-hold farmers via the agridealer networks.

In addition to capital, the businesses are given access to continuous hands-on local support and strategic advice and expertise through our network of international advisors. We have seen first hand how important support is for the success of a business, and we work closely together with the owners to ensure that they have they support they require for the business to reach its full potential.
